Bonded through Stars

During Covid in 2020 I buried myself in Scottish Folktales, and the beauty that this land holds, especially the Highlands. The result of all my studies, is a YA Fantasy Novel, set in a mirrored version of the Scottish Highlands, where all Folktales are reality. This book has prompted several other projects, that I present to you here.

Summary

Fifteen-year-old Skye Alexander has never known a life outside her small village in the Scottish Highlands, but all of that drastically changes one night when the stars disappear, and she finds out that her grandma actually comes from a magical mirror dimension, where all the myths and folklore she told Skye about are true, but now this realm seems to be in trouble.

Skye leaves her usual routine behind and ventures into Solas, where she is thrust into the kingdom’s war with the stellar constellations. The only way out, is to find the three objects that could end the war and Orion, the master of the constellations. Together with their queen, a shapeshifter, and an orphan boy, Skye must go on a quest, encountering many mythical creatures, more stars, and old wounds that don’t seem to close.

But when a long-forgotten truth tries to tear these four apart, it is on Skye to decide if she has the strength to step into the light or fall prey to the darkness of the night.

Come with me to Rionnag!

As my final Bachelor project I created a book depicting all the mythical creatures my novel holds. Everything is illustrated traditionally with watercolors and edited digitally. This book features different interactive elements such as foldable or changeable cards, attached letters and cards you can pull out. Everything in this book is handmade by myself, from the illustrations, binding, even the headband is self-made, from actual Scottish Tartan.
